Responsibilities of the Departmental Chair

  • Select a mentor whose views toward teaching and research are aligned with those generally accepted by the department
  • Assign a mentor to a new faculty member as soon as the offer of appointment is accepted, allowing the mentor to contact the new faculty member in advance, addressing critical questions and issues before his/her arrival
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is sent to the new faculty member for his/her review
  • Discuss the mentoring program with both the mentor and new faculty member
  • Be cognizant of the mentor's tasks in terms of short and long term goals (mentor's are usually appointed for three years, allowing interaction up to the time of the new faculty member's three-year probationary review)
