Science 100 Experience

Science 100 is taught using active and discovery based learning

These teaching strategies encourage students to ask questions and seek answers for themselves, both individually and in group settings.

  • Students learn in an environment that encourages interactions with each other and with the teaching staff. By dissolving the boundaries between the different sciences, students learn about the connections between disciplines and develop their problem solving skills. 

  • The addition of WRS 103 helps to not only improve communication skills but gives our students an introduction to scientific writing. 

  • A state of the art class room and teaching aides such as a video projection system, document camera and iClickers™ are used to help students think creatively; achieve mastery of fundamental concepts and to explore the connections between different disciplines.

Real hands on experience

A key component of science 100 is its emphasis on practical experience.
Laboratories, group projects, the capstone project and a field trip all combine to give students unique opportunities to both learn new skills and material and to apply them to real world situations.

  • Laboratories are customized for the course and integrated with lecture material. Students conduct a wide variety of investigations ranging from the properties of light to soil biodiversity to modeling the spread of a virus.

  • Group research projects encourage collaboration and team building and help build public speaking and presentation skills. 

  • The capstone project is a unique feature of the course. It is an independent research project that gives students a taste of the scientific research process while allowing them to explore a topic of personal interest. Students learn how to research and document their work and to present their findings. 

  • The field trip occurs early in the first term and serves both as a team building exercise and to introduce materials and concepts that are returned to throughout the course. Activities are designed to combine aspects of all the science disciplines and demonstrate the value of an integrated approach to science. Students get a small taste of what it is like to do field research.
